This website began many years ago as a student homepage, and of course, what student homepage would be complete without a list of favourite bands, musicians and composers?
Because I'm a programmer (and thus, exceedingly anal-retentive), a maths major (overly-concerned with definitions and sets) and a music pedant (not only interested in this sort of minutia, but happy to argue for hours about it), I've grouped the bands, etc. according to approximate genre. (For a pretty decent explanation of what these genres actually mean, take a look at the Trance section of Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music.) I've also provided links to official band websites where appropriate — all-Flash band websites will not be linked-to. (You're breaking the Internet, guys. You don't need Flash for your news column or your discography. Fire your web-designers and hire some new ones who understand how the Web works.)
Who knows? Perhaps all this obsessive-compulsive enumeration and micro-categorisation might one-day help someone discover a new band which is similar to a band they already like — thus removing some of the trial-and-error from the process — and I would actually be helping the bands I like (by spreading the word) and the people who visit this page (by saving them time and money and ultimately protecting them from the disappointment of failure) and somehow, in some small way, I'd be making the world a better place...
But I doubt it. Here's sports!
OK, so I kind of lost interest in the categorisation thing towards the end there, but the important part of this exercise, the insight which you are meant to derive, which will make the whole experience worth-while, is that you now understand that there is this genre of music called “industrial”, that I like this obscure genre of unpalatable crap (and am thus way cooler than everyone else), and that the industrial music community really needs some new adjectives to play with.
Remember: It is your taste in music that defines you as a person. This you must never forget.
